The Indian ocean sea routes to the Spice Islands (now mostly Indonesia) were controlled by Portugal and, to a lesser extent, Spain. Other countries wanted a share of the spice trade - pepper and cloves, for example, were literally worth their weight in gold. The obvious way to circumvent the Portuguese monopolywas to go round the world the other way. The Southern passage was very long and very dangerous, so it was natural to wonder if there was a way round America to the North.
The Europeans did not want to go all the way around the world they wanted to go straight through North America instead of taking more time. Hope it help
