They became more of a business outpost than a religious outpost. Money and valuables sent back to Spain. Also they helped Spain to enlarge it's sphere of influence around the world. The Spanish failed when they never tried to elevate the natives to full Spanish citizenship and equals. This breach kept Spain and its colonies from forming a truly united country.
