They are not allowed drink alcohol (if you are poor or middle class that is - it is a well-known fact that members of the regime and millionaire pro regime businessmen import and/or grow fine wines to drink), women are forced to wear a certain dress code (however, rich women do not have to - they only dress like this when photographed for the poor to maintain the image. They tend to go over the top to fake this and wear this black gear that is not even popular with poor or middle income Iranians), saying anything about the regime will get you in trouble, ethnic minorities and opposition are often jailed, killed or exiled, members of the regime who oppose policy often get impeached and/or jailed. Capital punishment is often given for minor offenses. Corruption is rife and the money is smuggled out of the country leaving most people poor.

Note: These are currently ways in which the Iranian government represses people, not just the past.
