At the time of the Moorish conquest of the Iberian Peninsula, in the 8th century, there was not a "Spanish Crown". The peninsula was covered with many kingdoms none of which were called "Spain". The individual Christian rulers resisted as best they could and over the centuries they pushed the Moors further and further South. In 1469 Isabella of the Kingdom of Castile married Ferdinand of the Kingdom of Aragon. In 1474 Isabella became the Queen of Castilla. In 1479 Ferdinand became the King of Aragon. The unification of their two kingdoms was the beginning of a strong, unified Spain. After a 10 year War of Grenada, they finally succeded in expelling the last Moors in Spain from the Moorish Kingdom of Grenada.
