It would not be difficult at all. Many had vows of silence. Others only allowed one or two to interact with the "outside" world.

Most of the common people could not read or write while the monks could. There was no reason for the common people to enter a monastery.

The nobility had its own priests to tend to their religious needs so they did not enter monasteries either.
