Hemlock is a coniferous tree characterized by its slender, drooping branches and soft, needle-like leaves that are typically dark green on top and lighter underneath. The tree can grow up to 100 feet tall and has a distinctive bark that is grayish-brown with a rough texture. Its cones are small, cylindrical, and usually hang downwards. The Latin name for the Western Hemlock tree is 'tsuga heterophylla.' It is native to the west coast of North America.
Hemlocks can grow to be quite large, reaching heights of up to 70-80 feet with a spread of about 25-35 feet. Some varieties, like the western hemlock, can grow even taller, reaching heights of over 100 feet. It's important to consider the specific species and growing conditions when estimating the size of a hemlock tree.
