എട്ടാംക്ലാസ്സില്‍ പഠിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ ഒപ്പിച്ച ഒരു കുസൃതിയുടെ കഥയാണ് കഥാകൃത്ത് യു.കെ. കുമാരന്‍ ഓര്‍ക്കുന്നത്. സ്‌കൂളില്‍ പോകുന്ന വഴിക്ക് ഗോപാലേട്ടന്റെ ചായപ്പീടികയുടെ പുറത്ത് ഒട്ടിച്ച നിത്യകന്യകയുടെ പോസ്റ്റര്‍ കുമാരനെ വല്ലാതെ ആകര്‍ഷിച്ചു. ഈ സിനിമാ പോസ്റ്റര്‍ പറിച്ചെടുത്താല്‍ പുസ്തകത്തിനു പൊതിയിടാം. നല്ല ചന്തമായിരിക്കും. കോഫി ബോര്‍ഡില്‍ ജൂനിയര്‍ ലെയ്‌സന്‍ ഓഫീസറായിരുന്ന ശ്രീധരനായിരുന്നു അന്ന് സഹപാഠിയും സഹയാത്രികനും. സംഭവം നടക്കുന്ന ദിവസം ശ്രീധരന്‍ കൂടെയില്ല. കുമാരന്‍ പോസ്റ്റര്‍ കീറിയെടുത്തു.
പിറ്റേന്ന് പൊതിയിട്ട പുസ്തകവുമായി ശ്രീധരനോടൊപ്പം സ്‌കൂളിലെത്തുമ്പോള്‍ ഗോപാലേട്ടന്‍. ചുറ്റിലും കുട്ടികള്‍. ആരോ പറഞ്ഞു: 'ഇവനാ പോസ്റ്റര്‍ കീറിയത്'-കുമാരന്‍ 'ഞാന്‍തന്നെ' എന്നു കൂളായി പറഞ്ഞു: 'ഈ മൂട്ടയോ' ക്ലാസ്സിലെ ഏറ്റവും ചെറിയ കുട്ടിയായ കുമാരനെ നോക്കി ഗോപാലേട്ടന്റെ കമന്റ്. പിന്നെ ഒരു ഭീഷണിയും. 'പോലീസില്‍ പരാതിപ്പെടും. നിനക്കാറുമാസം തടവും പിഴയും കിട്ടും.' പിന്നെ ക്ലാസ് മാഷോടും പരാതി പറയും. മധ്യസ്ഥശ്രമങ്ങള്‍ നടന്നു. അവസാനം ഗോപാലേട്ടന്‍ ഉന്നയിച്ച ആവശ്യം ഇതാണ്. നഷ്ടപരിഹാരം നല്കിയാല്‍ പ്രശ്‌നം പരിഹരിക്കാം. 50 പൈസ നഷ്ടപരിഹാരം എന്നു തീര്‍പ്പായി. കുമാരനെവിടുന്ന് നഷ്ടപരിഹാരം നല്കാന്‍? ചില്ലിക്കാശ് വീട്ടില്‍നിന്ന് കിട്ടില്ല. ഏതു പ്രതിസന്ധിയിലും രക്ഷയ്‌ക്കെത്തുന്ന ശ്രീധരന്‍തന്നെ വഴി കണ്ടെത്തി.
ക്ലാസ്സില്‍ മുതിര്‍ന്ന ഒരു കുട്ടിയുണ്ട്. മുഹമ്മദലി. കുറി നടത്തുന്ന ആളാണ്. പലിശയ്ക്ക് പണവും കൊടുക്കും. മുഹമ്മദലിയില്‍നിന്ന് അന്‍പതു പൈസ കടം വാങ്ങി. പൈസ കൊടുക്കുമ്പോള്‍ അവന്‍ പറഞ്ഞു: ദിവസവും അയ്യഞ്ചു പൈസ പലിശയാണ്. മറക്കരുത്. യു.കെ. സമ്മതിച്ചു. രണ്ടു മാസത്തിനുശേഷം ഒരു ദിവസം സ്‌കൂളില്‍ വരുമ്പോള്‍ ഗോപാലേട്ടന്റെ കട കത്തിനശിച്ചത് യു.കെ. കണ്ടു. അതിനു മുന്‍പില്‍ ഗോപാലനിരുന്ന് കരയുന്നതു കണ്ട് യു.കെ.യ്ക്ക് വിഷമമായി. മുഹമ്മദലി എട്ടാംക്ലാസ് പൂര്‍ത്തിയാക്കാതെ സ്ഥലംവിടുകയാണുണ്ടായത്. അളവ് തൂക്കത്തിന്റെ വ്യാജ ഇന്‍സ്‌പെക്ടറായി കടക്കാരില്‍നിന്ന് ധാരാളം പണംതട്ടി മുങ്ങിയ മേപ്പടിയാന്‍ പിന്നെ ചിട്ടിക്കമ്പനി നടത്തി. 'ഇപ്പോള്‍ മുതലാളി, മൂന്ന് ഭാര്യയുമുണ്ട്.' യു.കെ. പറയുന്നു.
