You're sure to pique their interest as they slam you to the ground at gunpoint after you inform them of your lack of essential documentation. If you are a citizen of an EU or of a "Schengen area" country you can travel the EU and Schengen area with a national identity card.

But, not all EU/Schengen countries issue national identity to their citizens. Citizens of all other countries need a passport, and in some cases non-EU/Schengen citizens need a visa.

It depends where you're flying to. Some form of identification will always be required to allow you to board a plane (normally photografic). If you're on an internal flight (i.e. not leaving the country) then normally you won't need a passport. If you're flying to Another Country you will need a passport to get through the various airport controls.

If coming from outside of Europe, you will need a Visa to enter. Once in Europe, the countries have no barriers to move between them by auto

If you are traveling by air, the answer is a bit different. There is an agreement between the following countries who have an arrangement called the Schengen agreement. Movement within those countries requires no Visa if you are from other Schengen countries. In practice, if you are in an airport and simply exit with the crowd from one Schengen country to another, nobody asks for anything....
