Even attempting to use the most basic of Thai will always be welcome by the Thai people.

To say hello, the introduction is Sawadee Ka for women and Sawadee Krup for men.

In addition to offering your verbal greeting, another part of the tradition is the visual 'Wai.' The wai (Thai: ไหว้, pronounced [wâːj]) consists of a slight bow, with the palms pressed together in a prayer-like fashion.

The Thai people are extremely polite and gentle. Among any basic rules of politeness, it is essential foul language is never used in the presence of a Thai, nor should any visitor ever criticise the Royal Family. Anyone breaching this etiquette may find themselves arrested. Nor should any evidence of public drunkenness be displayed for the same reason.
