Coming from Hong Kong, one way is to get flights from HK to Hanoi, then to Danang, then to Hoi An:
Land in Hanoi and get a taxi into the old quarter. stay at the old quarter hotel. it's 70-90 $US and the rooms are pretty spectacular. Flights from Hanoi to Danang are 70-90US$ and take an hour. You could also take the train.
The train is 15 hours on the new livitrans. Very nice cars but NO dining car, so eat before you get on. Bring your own booze and have a good night's sleep. The next morning you arrive at around 10:30am and can get a private car or cab right out front for US$25 the half hour ride to Hoi An.
