The gods seem to simply have their names from the start.

The revolutionaries in Paris referred to the Catholic church as "Pantheon," which means temple for all the gods. This name was given during the French Revolution in the late 18th century as part of the effort to secularize the church and create a space to honor important French figures.
yup God the father the son and the Holy Spirit
No. The Gods were "above" being placed in the sky in such fashion. The planets were named for them and represented them in the night sky. In this case, the planet Mars was considered holy to Ares (hence the name). Look at it this way, the constellations were placed in the heavens BY the gods. They weren't gods themselves.
The Greeks and the Romans. However, the Romans gave the gods new, Roman names. Zeus's Roman name was Jupiter.
