Indianapolis is a typical Midwestern city: family-friendly, a good place to raise a family, affordable to buy a home, you have to drive everywhere, but not as prone to job losses compared to most of the Midwest/Rustbelt. Indy is a comfortable "large" city to live in with a small town feel--depending on location. Dont live on the east side or the near-west side; it's best to stay outside the I-465 beltway. Traffic is fairly light compared to most cities but is heavy on the north and far south side during rush hour. I-69 is among the heaviest roads. The downtown area has seen significant improvment over the past 15-years or so. You can do many things in Indy that you can in bigger cities. The population is not as diverse--mostly anglo, suburban people. Indy is not a bustling city, and takes its own pace at things. It takes a long time to do any real road work, the skyline has been stagnant over the past 15-years, new sewers are needed, and more job growth is needed. Crime is above the national average but lower than a few years ago--much lower than the most dangerous of US cities. The people like Basketball.. The city is divided in loyalty between Indiana University and Purdue University. It has 2 professional sports teams: the Colts and PAcers. The Colts won the Super Bowl in 2007, and the Pacers have been competitive but without a championship. And dont forget the Indy 500 and the Brickyard 400--the largest single-day sporting events in the world. Indy residents are comparitively friendly, but redneckish in some areas due to the Kentucky influence. Fishers, Carmel, Noblesville, Zionsville, Plainfield, Greenwood, Avon and a few other subrubs--all modest in size compared to most other suburbs in other cities--are nice to live in easily. Hamilton County is seeing the fastest growth and the heaviest growth in the Midwest. Indy has a number of things to do: sporting events, musuems, better shopping than years past, and is within a close drive to Cincinnati or Louisville or Chicago. Indy is basically a growing Midwestern, family-oriented city--much different than the Coastal cities--but nice to live depending on location.
