The problem with this was that magnets in vending machines were designed to prevent steel slugs from being used as legitimate currency (keep in mind this was 1943 where a penny could still buy some things) making them impossible to use in vending machines. Also, in circulation whenever the coin would come in contact with moisture such as sweat from being in pockets, the coin would rust. This meant that coins deteriorated at an alarming rate. Eventually the US government destroyed many of them, but there are a lot of them still in private collections making them easy to collect with most pieces running from 3 to 10 cents depending on condition.
