Nations like to control their borders, and to exercise control over who is allowed to enter their country and how long that visitor can stay, and so forth. In order to exercise this control they have to know who their visitors are, what their nationality is, what the purpose of their visit it, and so forth. They cannot control their border without some kind of documentation. A passport serves that purpose.
