One of the criteria for eligibility of the Purple Heart medal is to have sustained an injury as a result of armed combat against an enemy of the USA during wartime. If your WWII vet has paperwork of any sort to prove he fits the bill then yes, he is entitled to the Purple Heart Medal. If he's in the USA, he can take said paperwork (proof) to a Veteran Service Officer at any Federal Office Building, and some County Offices have them, too. Check your local phone book, or ask around at any VFW or American Legion post.

A soldier who receives the purple heart was wounded in combat during military service. It may be presented to his/her family if deceased. The wounds received must be caused by the enemy for the award to be valid. A Humvee rollover, for example, would not result in a purple heart.
