Jackson became a national hero after his victory at New Orleans. He came to Washington and was the toast of the town for awhile. There was talk about running him for President. Thomas Jefferson met with him and got him to promise not to run until Monroe had served two terms. In 1824, Jackson was the leader in both popular and electoral vote but did not win the required majority of electoral vote and the House elected J. Q. Adams as president. Jackson and his supporters took steps to win in 1828. They gained control of several newspapers and kept up a constant barrage of anti-Adams editorials. Jackson got himself elected to the US Senate and so became something a Washington insider. He won in 1828 and again in 1832. His party stayed in power with van Buren in 1836, lost in 1840 and came back with Polk in 1844.
