Police officers have to periodically "qualify" or show proficiency with their sidearms, and may also be required to complete in-service training and show proficiency in driving, physical fitness, first aid, defensive tactics, and other skills. The requirement to show proficiency with firearms is consistent, although the interval between tests many be as short as one month or as long as two years, depending on the agency. The other proficiency tests vary widely, and many agencies require no other proficiency tests at all once the officer has completed his recruit training.
