John Adams' choice was the bald eagle. It was a battle between himself, Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin. Jefferson wanted the dove; Franklin the turkey. Despite Franklin ranting and raving over the notion of "a cowardly bird" such as the bald eagle, it was put to a vote and the bald eagle won.
The eagle is the national bird of the USA, for the same reason it's the symbol of many nations. It's big, strong, real, majestic, and it's mentioned in the Bible in several phrases. In many ways, the eagle is the bird of the food chain. I think at one time Thomas Jefferson wanted the dove to be the national bird, and Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey, but, according to the play/movie; "1776", John Adams wanted the eagle and got his way.
