It's unknown. He showed some symptoms, such as sensitivity to loud noises, incredible shyness (including a hard time looking people in the eye, causing Alexander Hamilton to call him "shifty-eyed"), inability to relate to others, and various eccentricities. He is often described as "very eccentric" and was very devil-in-the-details. He also had a mockingbird that consistently rested on his shoulder that might have been a support animal of sorts. There is more on it in the book "Diagnosing Jefferson", but we will probably never know for sure.
