Grant was president from 1869-1877.

The year 1885 was the year of his death from throat cancer, probably brought on by stress, following a scandalous fraud - not involving him - at a bank of which he was a director.

In his last weeks, he was struggling to write his memoirs, so that his family would have something to live on after his death. In this, he was successful. He managed to complete the book, just days before he died. It was a surprisingly good book, from a man who did not look or sound like an author, and it sold very well for years.
