Artillery is currently and has historically been used for enemy suppression and close support of allied units. While artillery fire can be devastating (anyone who has witnessed a battery firing for effect can attest to this), it is effective only in an area. Modern artillery, with computer controlled fire systems, can be very accurate; however, it cannot be pinpoint accurate such as laser guided munitions or G&C oriented missiles.

The nuclear weapons of the cold war still exist. They were in responsible controlled hands during the cold war (which is why there wasn't a war). The problem: Keeping them out of un-controlled hands.

Back in World War II there were bombs and soldiers going around with guns, but now America has nuclear warheads that can take out entire nations. Opposed to when countries could only take out cities.
Atomic weapons impact the balance of military power in the world today in the sense that produce a sense of fear in the countries that have weak militaries.
The new weapons changed the way soldiers fought in WW1 because they were much better. They had tanks and many new guns which were better than before.
