Yes. Sonia Sotomayor was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes, an autoimmune disease that attacks the pancreas and destroys the body's insulin-producing cells, at age 8.

In type I diabetes (formerly known as juvenile diabetes) the body stops producing the insulin hormone that converts sugars and starches into energy. Although it can be managed with diet, exercise and insulin injections, it does not remit like Type II diabetes sometimes does.

Sotomayor's diabetes is reportedly well controlled, with A1C levels consistently under 6.5.
