Absolutely. Though the standard issue weapon is the Beretta 92F, the Marine Special Operations Command routinely issues 1911's (not originals, but modified Kimber's, which are exceptional guns) to its Marines.

The 1911 is also used by other military members as either primary or personal backup weapons, for the same reason the 1911 was designed and issued 100 years ag. It simply has more knockdown power due to its lower muzzle velocity (870 fps) than a 9mm round does. While it might take you a few 9mm rounds to bring someone down (especially if they're on PCP or other stimulants) it usually only takes one or two .45 rounds to bring someone down.

Can a regular private in the us army carry an m1911 instead of a 9 mm?

No. Only a handful of units even have M1911s at their disposal, and almost all of them are special operations units. Not even all of the units subordinate to SOCOM have the M1911 available to them. The only way a Private in the Army would be able to carry an M1911 is if they were permitted to bring their own - and they are not. That aside, most enlisted personnel don't even get issued a pistol. I don't know if you think everyone gets a rifle and a pistol for backup, but that's not the case.

What did the army do with the 45 pistols?

Under Federal government laws, the US Armed Forces took all of their surplus M1911 Colt.45 pistols, after they were replaced by a new type of pistol, and dumped them into the ocean in a very deep spot, so they could not be used by criminal.

How do you shoot a colt m1911?

The Colt M1911 is a single-action semiautomatic pistol. To fire it, you must first insert a loaded magazine into the magazine well. Then pull the slide all the way back, this will cock the hammer. Release the slide and let it return to battery, this performs the action of stripping a round from the magazine and chambering it. Now align the sights on target and pull the trigger. When the pistol has expended all the rounds, the slide will lock back. At this point, press the magazine release, located at the rear of the trigger guard, and the magazine will drop to the floor.

Who invented the Colt 45?

The M1911 is a single-action, semiautomatic handgun chambered for the .45 ACP cartridge. It was designed by John M. Browning, and was the standard-issue side arm for the United States armed forces from 1911 to 1985, and is still carried by some U.S. forces. It was widely used in World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Its formal designation as of 1940 was Automatic Pistol, Caliber .45, M1911 for the original Model of 1911 or Automatic Pistol, Caliber .45, M1911A1 for the M1911A1, adopted in 1924. The designation changed to Pistol, Caliber .45, Automatic, M1911A1 in the Vietnam era. In total, the United States procured around 2.7 million M1911 and M1911A1 pistols during its service life. The M1911 is the most well-known of John Browning's designs to use the short recoil principle in its basic design. Besides the pistol being widely copied itself, this operating system rose to become the pre-eminent type of the 20th century and of nearly all modern pistols. For the source and more detailed information concerning your request, click on the related links section indicated below.

What is the best 45acp caliber pistol?

It's subjective, and a matter of opinion. Some people will swear by the Colt M1911 all day long, others praise Kimber (in spite of their use of MIM internals). Personally, I'm partial to the Sig P220.
