No she does not, she stand as the great American example of volunteers. She is just his wife. Her duty is to her husband first to stand beside him and support him. The president makes currently $400,000.00 a year that is enough to support his family comfortably. Don't forget they pay no bills. They fed picks up everything. Just a note currently, the presidential credit card is over drawn. Believe me they are well compenstated.

Being the spouse of the President is not a paid position. There are quite a few perks however that would cost ordinary people quite a bit of money including having most of her meals and travel paid for, medical expenses covered, living in the White House rent-free (where all the utilities are already paid for, maintenance is covered, etc) and so forth. Since she was also the official hostess of the White House, she had a staff paid to assist her (which I'm sure she was grateful for!). First-ladies also tend to get some nice gifts that they are allowed to use while first-lady, although they are generally not allowed to keep any of them when they leave (they are considered gifts to the nation, not the first-lady - she just gets to use them). Gifts given by family and pre-existing friends are, of course still gifts from family and friends and don't fall under that restriction.

She may make some good money for being the FORMER First-Lady. Hillary Clinton cashed in big-time on that on the lecture circuit. Should she chose to resume her law practice she would obviously be in high demand and could command a high salary based on both her experience when practicing law and her status as a famous first-lady. Whether by way of lecturing or lawyering her position as former first-lady would translate to higher earnings, thus being sort of a case of delayed payment for being first-lady.
