There were no airplanes and automobiles were experimental when McKinley was alive. There was an extensive network of passenger railroads. Ocean liners made overseas trips and riverboats still carried passenger up and down the navigable rivers. People traveled by horse-drawn vehicles or on horseback for shorter distances and people did more walking. More people lived near enough to their work to be able to walk.
