Jackson was the commanding general in the Battle of New Orleans which was a tremendously overwhelming victory for the Americans and made Jackson a national hero. He capitalized on his success by visiting Washington and becoming the toast of the town. People thought about running him for President in 1816, but James Monroe, who was also a war hero and a founding father, had the backing of Madison and Jefferson so his candidacy were deferred until 1824.
