If you know a torpedo is in the water, all you need to do is change course. Torpedoes run on solutions. A torpedo solution is a diagram of a ship's course, range, and speed used by sub officers to program torpedo guidance systems. Unguided torpedoes need the ship to be in the right place at the right time, so turning or decelerating might save the ship. Having the torpedo strike the bow may cause it to not detonate, but it is a very risky maneuver.
Guided torpedoes, however, are nearly impossible to avoid. Acoustic homing systems, introduced at the end of WWII, might be foiled by silent running. Most surface ships do not have the capability to move while being undetected by passive sonar. Infrared or other mechanisms are inescapable, and the only hope lay in shooting the traveling torpedo.
