Acceptance to any of the five federal service academies is a remarkable accomplishment. Individuals who are seriously interested in competing for a nomination should seek guidance from an individual who has been involved in the admissions process recently. In 2002 I was accepted to all five federal service academies (USNA, USAFA, USMA, USMMA, USCGA). If you are serious about being a cadet or midshipman I encourage you to immediately seek the advice of someone willing to evaluate your extra-curricular and academic record to provide you guidance geared toward your particular situation. It is very competitive to gain entrance into any of the service academies, whether you apply to West Point(Army), Annapolis(Navy & Marine Corps), the Air Force Academy, the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Ct or even the Merchant Marine Academy. You will need to be in the upper levels of your graduating class, have taken a number of science, math and computer courses, been active in extra-curricular activites or sports. A good background to have is English, Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus, Chemistry and Physics and computers. If you have a good academic base then you should do well. Realistically speaking, you should start applying during the early part of your junior year in high school. You will need a nomination from either your US Congressman or US Senators. The sooner you start the better your chances. An application would need to be filled out and submitted to the Naval Academy. You can get a better idea of the application process by going to www.usna.edu where you will see a list of steps to take as far as applying. Keep one thing in mind, if you do not succeed your first time around, you can still apply for the class following your original target class. There is also the Academy Prep School option as well which would be for people without strong academic backgrounds. You would spend a year in Newport, RI where you would be sent through a regimen similar to what a Plebe(freshman) at the Naval Academy would face. This would enhance your chances of admission greatly and also qualify you for a Secretary of the Navy nomination should you pass this course of instruction. Also ask if there is a Blue and Gold officer in your area as they can give you more personalized assistance into gaining admission. Good luck if you do decide to apply. It will be a most unique experience.
