The reason there is a question whether the records might still exist is that there was a fire in 1974 at the warehouse in St. Louis (caused by careless smoking) where many service records were stored, which destroyed a goodly percentage of WWII service records, and some from WWI as well. But it doesn't hurt to ask, and I understand they are "reconstructing" records these days if someone asks. Also, if they were lost in the fire, and if your ancestor lived to get home, there is a chance that the VA MIGHT have a copy.
