Almost half the world, over three billion people, live on less than $2.50 a day. That statistic is global in itself. But even if poverty seems foreign, it hold effects on even the wealthiest countries in the world. Not only do people, as global citizens, have a responsibility to stop global poverty, but global poverty affects the entire world. The United States, for example, would benefit economically and with better national security if global poverty was reduced. Bringing people out of poverty would give the U.S. market more consumers abroad. Already 40% of U.S. exports go to developing nations. Defense secretary Robert Gates as well as Joint Chiefs of Staff and numerous generals have expressed the importance of poverty reduction as it relates to national security. Poverty stricken regions are often unstable and vulnerable, meaning they are more open for terrorist organizing or drug trafficking.
