It uses a sophisticated radar system made by Sierra Nevada Corp called TALS (Tactical Automated Landing System). The radar sits on the deck of the ship, and brings the Fire Scout in for the landing. The radar has a gyro leveling base so as the ship pitches, the radar remains level and pointed at the Fire Scout.
Once the TALS acquires the Fire Scout, it sends correction data to the aircraft, telling it to go up, down, left, or right to get on the desired landing path.
Then, all the operator has to do is press Autoland, and watch TALS land the bird.

With ships not fitted to carry containers on deck they can usually be lashed down in the ships internal holds (if available). If the containers need to be stored on deck lashing points can be welded to the weather deck to facilitate this.
