The bullet will go just as far regardless of what sight you're using. But taking aim will get harder and harder w/o a scope. 300 yards should be doable but Marines are trained to hit targets at 500 yards, it just depends on experience.
For a rifle that fires between 800 & 1000 FPS you should set your target at 60 feet. You will have to adjust for rifles that shoot at a slower FPS.

It can shoot about 3 miles. It can shoot accurately to about 1100 meters in the hands of a highly skilled marksman, depending on which rifle is firing the cartridge.
