Guns developed from very simple, muzzle loading cannons that were inaccurate, heavy and short ranged.

Muskets use longer barrels, increased accuracy, and became a primary weapon. The addition of rifling increased the accuracy (and effective range), then breach loaders made reloading faster.

This was followed by weapons with multiple rounds in magazines or revolving chambers, which led to semi and full automatic weapons in common use today.

Current developments include smarter weapons that compensate for wind and range, fire different shot types, although most work on basic firearms is currently on improving accuracy and durability.
