Why is President Obama famous in Hawaii?

He did not achieve fame while he lived in Hawaii. Once he became nationally known, people in Hawaii no doubt found it interesting that he was born in Hawaii and that his grandmother still lived there.

Barack Obama was born in Hawaii in 1961. He lived there for the first five years of his life, before moving to Indonesia with his mom and new step-dad. He returned to Hawaii when he was about ten, to finish school. He lived in Honolulu with his maternal grandparents and graduated from the Punahou School in 1979. He then left for college, but still returns to Hawaii to vacation and to visit friends and relatives.

Until Barack Obama was elected president in 2008, Hawaii had never had any politician who became president. (Hawaii only achieved statehood in 1959, but prior to that, it was a US territory.) Thus, the election of President Obama was widely celebrated in his home state, as well as in Illinois, his adopted state.
