Unlike the other branches, the Navy can operate and fight in the air, on water, under the water, in Space, and on land. The other branches are typically limited to 2 or 3 of those, but not all.

The Navy is also normally the first service that can respond quickly to an international crisis, its ships being strategically positioned around the globe for such reasons. Army and Air Force units must rely on assets that aren't as covert as those operated by the Navy. For covert land operations, either Marine Force Recon Units or Navy SEALs are used. The Marines are a separate service branch, like the Navy, under the Department of the Navy. Marines are typically embarked on Naval vessels as quick reaction forces. SEAL's use Naval Aviation, their own operators (SWCC's), or submarines for covert insertion.

The Navy has all elements of warfare and hardware that all of the other services have and use independently, but not as a whole. This is primarily due to their unique mission in keeping strategic waterways (Sea traffic lanes) open. The U.S. is a Maritime nation - we depend on many strategic materials to survive (and not just oil). Without the constant flow of those materials, we wouldn't last.
