There are no term limits imposed on US federal Senators. The longest-serving member of the federal Senate was Democratc Robery Byrd, elected in 1958 and re-elected in 1964, 1970, 1976, 1982, 1988, 1994 and 2000, before winning a ninth and final term in 2006. He died four years into his term in 2010. Had he survived until November 6 2012 and successfully ran for re-election, he would have been the only federal Senator in history to win a tenth term in office. He served in the Senate for 57 years, and this remains the longest length of service on record.
