POPULAR VOTE: Lyndon B. Johnson / Hubert Humphrey (vp) (Democrat) 43,126,506 (61%) Barry Goldwater (Rpublican) 27,176,799 (39%)
ELECTORIAL VOTE: Johnson 486 Goldwater 52
INAUGURAL ADDRESS: January 20, 1965. (S.Menzel)
LBJ was the governor of Texas. Kennedy needed southern votes (electoral votes specifically) in order to carry the election. Southern Democrats are known to have an inherent distrust of a) northerners b) Massachusetts in general c) The Irish in general. Lyndon Johnson delivered Texas and many other southern states that would have otherwise voted for Richard Nixon. The granddaddy of all his contribution was cash. Texas--->oil---->$---->influential voters who want their oil businesses, refineries and fields to be on the winning side = votes ---> electoral votes. []
The decision of a VP often carries a lot baggage. The area he is from carries weight, the number of electoral votes in his state is a factor, and can he bring something to the ticket that is needed. When LBJ was asked to be VP for Kennedy he had many things that made him a good choice. He knew the Senate/Congress very well since he had been in it for years and knew where the secrets were. He was from TX and that could counter the "eastern" look of JFK. TX also carried a number of electoral votes. Kennedy and LBJ didn't like each other, but he gave the ticket what it needed.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 (brought by JFK, but signed by LBJ) abolished segregation in public accommodations; Voting Rights Act of 1965, signed by LBJ, abolished unfair voting practices (too many to name); and the 24th Amendment, which abolished the poll tax on voting the year before (1964).
Johnson was a very powerful Senate leader and knew a lot of info about everyone in the Senate and was not afraid to use it. He also was from Texas which had many electoral votes. Kennedy disliked Johnson, but he needed him to win. Kennedy had the eastern coast pretty much in place for the election but need the help of Johnson to get the western states.
