This is a very difficult question to answer. The Civil War was about those that wanted slavery to continue and those that didn't and often President Lincoln was hated for wanting to free the slaves. Two presidents I highly regard and love to read about is Abraham Lincoln and JFK. My own opinion is although the Civil War was the bloodiest war in the history of the U.S. on native soil, you might say he saved a lot of lives ... those of the black people. Look where they are today. Many are lawyers, teachers, preachers, judges, actors, businessmen, etc. It was a long while after Lincoln was assassinated before blacks were accepted by many whites, but it's getting better although there is certainly still some racism in certain parts of the U.S.

Who created the Emancipation Proclamation?

President Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the U.S., issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. The Civil War was a war of contradictions. The South seceded to perpetuate slavery and instead ended up destroying it. North vowed not to interfere with slavery and won sufficient support to kill it. Unlike many abolitionists, President Lincoln understood he couldn't eliminate slavery without first saving the union. And unlike many conservative Republicans and Democrats, he realized he couldn't save the union without eliminating slavery.
