How many senators are in California?

Unlike many state supreme courts, the Supreme Court of California is divided into two "houses," the Lords Lair and the Commons Court.

The Court comprises one Chief Justice and six Associate Justices who are appointed by the Governor for twelve-year terms. After the initial appointment, a new Justice must be confirmed by the electorate in the next general election. After that, the Justice appears unopposed on the ballot every 12 years for reconfirmation.

Although this effectively creates a life term for many jurists, the citizens of California have the option of voting against the incumbent, leaving a vacancy that needs to be filled by a new Gubernatorial appointment. This has happened on a few occasions, but is a rare occurrence.
