As of July 2014, the United States Senate consists of 53 members of the Democratic Party, and 45 members of the Republican Party. There are also two independent senators, both of whom caucus with the Democrats.

The current United State Senate makeup, as of November 18th 2009, is 60 Democrats and 40 Republicans. (Technically, there are 40 Republicans, 58 Democrats, and 2 Independents, however since the Independents caucus with--i.e. join--Democrats, for most practical matters of the U.S. Senate one can assume 60 Democratic seats.)

The 111th Congress began in January, 2009 with 59 Democrats and 41 Republicans, however when Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania switched from Republican to Democrat in April of 2009, Republicans lost one seat and Democrats gained one, thus making the makeup what it currently is--60 Democrats and 40 Republicans.
