I could be wrong about this, but he didn't have a salary. He was a wealthy man, as was all of our first President's, so a salary wasn't considered. The Presidency wasn't thought of as a "job" it was seen as a public service for man to give back to his nation and then go home when he had finished his term of office. Our political figures today have made politics into a profession and is part of the problem.
