One significant thing about the election of 1960 was that the first catholic president was elected. Another thing was that it combined the southern and northern democrats much more effectively than had been done in the previous two elections, an act that may have helped pave the way to civil rights legislation.

You are a bit confused. It was Richard M. Nixon who resigned, not Gerald Ford. Ford lost an election to Jimmy Carter, but he did not resign. As President Ford did not do very much, but he is best remembered for having pardoned Nixon. Whether that pardon constitutes an accomplishment or a failure remains a matter of debate (personally I consider it to be a failure).
