All ranks, be it Enlisted or Officer, earn pay based on both rank and time in service. The current pay scales for O-4 (LCDR), are:

Less than 2 Yrs - 4,026.90

Greater than 2 Yrs - 4,661.40

Greater than 3 Yrs - 4,972.20

Greater than 4 Yrs - 5,041.80

Greater than 6 Yrs - 5,330.40

Greater than 8 Yrs - 5,640.00

Greater than 10 Yrs - 6,025.20

Greater than 12 Yrs - 6,325.50

Greater than 14 Yrs - 6,534.30

Note: Basic pay for O-6 and below is limited by Level V of the Executive Schedule which is $11,958.30.

Keep in mind that these are BASIC monthly rates, and do not reflect inclusion of other possible allowances, such as housing, hazardous duty pay, dependents, Sea Pay, etc., which can significantly add a lot more to the monthly total based on the Officer's billet and other factors.

These figures represent the 3.9% increase which went into effect at the beginning of the year. I wouldn't expect anything more as long as the current administration is around though.

This all depends on which branch of the military you are talking about. In the Army, Air Force, & Marines the term "Captain" is typically interchangeable with the term "Commander." A Captain typically commands a company-sized element. Of course, there are also Battalion, Brigade, and Division Commanders as well who are much higher in rank than Captain.
