It's about a dad, Papa with a daughter, Anna who's wife, Mama died the day after her son, Caleb was born. They live in the prairie. Caleb was asking did mama sing every day to Anna all the time. (she did and Anna did the mom's work.) The dad put an ad in a newspaper saying he needs a wife and a girl named Sarah who lives in Maine, loves the ocean, and has a cat named Seal responds. She comes and says she'll stay for a month. There is a big storm and Sarah draws a picture of the plains, but something is missing from it. When it is finished there neighbors come over and help them plow their fields. Sarah leaves out to town and comes back, but Caleb starts to get sad before Sarah comes because he thinks she left. Sarah brings the colors of the sea and they add them to the picture. Papa and Sarah get married.
