Yes, but it can be done and depends on a lot of things outside of your control. Your AFSC and promotion rates being a couple of things I am talking about. Also without a CCAF in your primary job and SNCOA you stand no chance....none!
In order to have a legit chance of making it your first time, you had better have awesome records for the last 10 years, with Major Awards, and firewall 5 EPR's. Your latest EPR needs to be SRE if eligable. If you just started to try an make Senior after making Master, you stand no chance at all.
The last thing that you have in your control is your test. The average test score is in the low 60's, so if you can score in the mis to high 80's that will make up for some time in grade/service points.
A Master Sergeant wouldn't have any need to ask a Lieutenant this... if the Master Sergeant doesn't know this already, I have to wonder how they ever got hard striped pinned on them.
If the recruiter is an active duty US Marine he can become any grade that he earns through hard work, recommendations from a commanding officer and length of service time. Marines start as private, pfc, lance corporal, corporal, sergeant, staff sergeant and then gunnery sergeant. And finally the highest ranks of enlisted men the Master Sergeant and First Sergeant
