In reality, your question makes no sense without any context. It's like asking "Which it better, a shovel or a wrench?" It all depends on what you want to do with it.

In this case, you need to to be more specific: are you asking about which will train you to shoot better? Which offers more high-tech training in your military career? Which has better food?

Depends on which regard you're talking about, and what you want out of it. For getting into certain occupations, each branch will have its advantages over the other, while it may be at a disadvantage for other occupations.

The Army and Marines have two separate missions, but in terms of American military history, the Marines have a far superior combat record. Each branch has its strengths and weaknesses, designed for their different role in America's

defense.

Combat Record: See the Chosin Reservoir Campaign as the prime example. When the Chinese attacked the Marine and Army units in November 1950, the Army units collapsed and ran, abandoning their small arms and artillery. Thousands were killed, captured, or froze to death, in the single most costly defeat in American history. The 1st Marine Division, however, fought their way through 70 miles of Chinese soldiers, killing an estimated 35,000 at a cost of 863 killed and 12,000 wounded (combat and frostbite).

Bootcamp: Marine bootcamp is 3 weeks longer and far more strenuous. Shooting is stressed; the lowest acceptable score on the rifle range is higher than the Army's top score. After boot camp, both Marines and attend basic combat school, and then go to their MOS school,

Each service has different yet overlapping tasks. This creates similar organizations, for example they both have an infantry and armor. Because they have separate tasks for their similar organizations there will be differences. An example of this is aviation. Both the Marines and the Army have aviation, however the Marines operate fighter aircraft (Harrier, Hornet) whereas the Army deals primarily with helicopters. The Marines have a strict, more time consuming initial training then the Army and this creates tighter unit cohesion. The Army has better family programs and career opportunities. It all depends on where you want to go and what you want to do. Serving your country is an honorable task that no one can deny. However, if you decide to join any branch for glory you're doing it for the wrong reasons. Selfless Service is a value both branches hold true.

In theory the Marine Corps and Army have two different missions.

The Marines are to accompany Navy ships and be ready to deploy to anywhere in world at very short notice. They have the ability to deploy men, heavy vehicles (tanks, armored personnel carrier), aircrafts while other the Armed Forces are moving to the area. In short, the Marines are a contingency force that react quickly to conflict.

The Army has a much broader mission. In short, their job is to fight and win any armed conflict. The Army is a much more diverse force. They have many heavy armored units that can move through and capture any conventional target. In addition they have light and medium (Stryker) units that are more nimble. In addition the Army has their own quick reacting force in the paratroopers (which are much more widely used than the Marines). Army Paratroopers can arrive anywhere in the world in 18 hours (vs 72 of the Marines) and in any terrain (vs just shorelines in the USMC). However, unlike the USMC which can deliver tanks and aircrafts, the Paratroopers drop into combat without any sort of heavy equipment. To add to that, the Army only has the bulk of the Special Ops community. Among them are Rangers and Special Forces (Green Berets). Rangers are a more elite airborne light infantry than the already elite paratroopers. Special Forces are tasked with unconventional warfare which ranges from training indigenous peoples to finding and capturing high value targets. SF is usually placed in country weeks or even months before any conventional force from the Army, Marines or any other branch will arrive. In addition the Army National Guard (a reserve force) is tasked US emergencies including immediate reaction to invasion on US soil.

However do to the fact that there has been very few times Marines are needed in intended role (none in the last 20 years) minus humanity missions, the Marines has been used to as a light force to supplement the Army efforts. Marines are viewed to be very useful in invasion as very quick moving force (Marines earned a very good reputation after the first Gulf War). However do to their lack of a large Special Ops community (one has recently been created) they were all but sidelined in the Afghanistan invasion. Also during the Iraq War (2003) Marine invading forces were found too be light, venerable to enemy attacks, and arrived to objectives much later than Army counterparts, slowing the pace of the invasion. During many Marine-led missions (ie Battle of Fallujah), the Marines had request heavier Army units to act as their assaulting forces. This has caused tension in the military, because many felt the Army has to their job and then spend more assets assisting the Marines with theirs.

The Army however has had the flexible to meet all of its objectives with their own units. Using light forces in places like Afghanistan and heavier units in places like Iraq. However this has always been the Army's job; to win in combat, regardless of when or where with the ability to assist (in case of SF), invade, and conduct anti-insurgence operations (the bulk of modern warfare) Whereas the Marines have to be pushed to supplement to the Army in a time of a over stretched military.

However there are those that believe that have better discipline and cohesion among the entire Corps. Non-combat Marines are viewed to be more combat ready than their Army-counterparts (though the Army has been great change to this in recent years). The average Marine is thought to a better marksman than the average Soldier. Marine pride is seen throughout the Corps whereas many in the Army take identity in their unit (ie 82nd Airborne Division, 101st Airborne, 3rd Infantry, organization are by themselves a 1/3 of the size of the entire Marine Corps).

Army in contrast offers much much more higher level training opportunities than in the USMC. Almost all Army Officers have attended Ranger school (whereas only specialized Marines such as Recon Marines attend) and all Army Infantry Officers are Airborne-qualified. Other schools include Sapper, Air Assault, and Mountain Warfare. (Marine Basic Sniper Course is 4 weeks longer than the Army's course, and all snipers from the Army's 25th Division are sent to the Marine's course) In additions the Army has a big contribution to the Special Ops community in the Rangers, SF, Nightstalkers (pilots), PSYOPS, and Civil Affairs whereas the USMC has just recently created a very small MARSOC unit modeled after Army SF.

When it comes to combat, the Army is tasked with the primary objectives (ie Khandar province in Afghanistan) where Marines are tasked with a secondary (ie Helmand assisted by Army Stryker units).

It is worth noting that the Army has much newer equipment (weapons, nvgs, vehicles) than the Marines.

There are many that say a 11B (Army Infantryman) is very different than a 0311(Marine Infantryman). However I personally do not believe this because there have been many times (in Afghanistan) units have to been mixed.

I do not wish to imply the Army is better than the Marine Corps. The Army just has much more abilities than the USMC on the account that they are tasked to do more and are much (2x on active duty size, and 4x including reserves) larger, (ie heavy units, SF units, paratroopers, National Guardmen). However in the areas that they overlap (light infantry forces) the differences depend more on the individual unit than the branch.

The USMC has just not had the chance to perform its in intended purpose (waterborne quick reaction force) in quite some time whereas the Army has been overused to the point where they have used large amounts of reserve troops and the USMC has been called on to supplement them. There are those including Sec of Def. Gates that feel the usefulness of waterborne invasion in waning in todays world and the USMC needs to specialize in tasks that the Army cannot perform (ie combat operations at sea against pirates).

For those that like numbers. Marine Basic is 12 weeks (plus 1 week of reception). Army non-Armor-Infantry-Engineer- or Military Police recruits attend Basic that is 9 weeks (plus 1 week of reception). All other Army recruits (combat oriented troops) attend a 14 weeks OSUT program which includes basic training plus mos-skills taught in a basic-like setting.

For those who like to split hairs. The Marines have a nicer dress uniform but the newly retouched Army Service Uniform looks pretty snazzy as well.

Technically, the US Army is a separate service and is under the Department of the Army while the US Marine Corp and the US Navy are both separate services under the Department of the Navy.

Additionally, each service's mission is different. The US Army is an occupational force. The US Marine Corp is an assault force. The Army is the anvil, the Marines are the hammer.

This all has to do with your preference. Personally i can't pick. i have family and friends in both branches, though i would rather be a marine for more personal reasons. So only you can decide that for yourself.
