Depending upon the size of the air bed, compressing it (in order to force the air from it) can present an awkward challenge. The easiest method I have found for forcing the air out of an air bed is to roll it up, starting with the end farthest from the air plug. This can be laborious, but avoids just shunting the air around the inside of the air bed inefficiently. Alternatively, with a good vacuum cleaner or air pump, the air could be removed from the air bed with less physical effort. However, this may take longer to achieve with an underpowered device.
