Scallywags
Northerners were called the Union. Southerners were called the Confederacy.
because they are ignorant.
The Confederacy
They did not recognise the Confederacy as a sovereign nation. They regarded it as a collection of states in rebellion against the US IMPROVEMENT .....and they called them "rebels" or "Johnny Reb" or "Goddamn secessionists"
Because the Southerners pretty much made a confederacy, breaking away from the Union. Another reason is that the South had slaves, the Union did not
They chose moderates to lead them so as to win support from Southerners who were unsure about splitting from the Union.
The Confederacy....
Vicksburg was strategically important for the Confederacy as it controlled the Mississippi River, a vital transportation route for supplies and troops. For southerners supplying the Confederacy from Texas, Vicksburg served as a critical hub for moving goods and reinforcements eastward. The city's capture by Union forces in 1863 effectively split the Confederacy and disrupted supply lines, making it essential for Texas and other southern states to maintain control over Vicksburg to ensure effective logistics and support for their war efforts.
Many southerners hoped dependence on cotton would force great Britain to formally reconize the confederacy as an independent nation.
They supported the confederacy.
They thought Britain would be pleased to seeAmerica, its fast-growing economic rival, split into two. And they knew that France was wanting influence in Mexico, and it would suit them if Mexico's next-door neighbour, the Confederacy was pro-French.
The Confederacy named moderate Jefferson Davis its president.
