Sikander Bhakt (1918 - 2004) was the first Kerala governor who died in office. He was a former Industrial Minister (1998 - `99) and a former Opposition Leader of Rajya Sabha. He was the senior-most politician of BJP at the time of his death. He was one of the rare Muslims in BJP. He suffered a serious pneumonia after a surgery and died on 23rd February 2004. He was aged 86 at that time and was holding the post of Governor since 18th April 2002, after succeeding Sukhdev Singh Kang, who was the governor from 25th January 1997.
The then Kerala Chief Minister and current Indian Defence Minister A.K. Antony, after hearing his death news, ordered a probe on Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital, for killing the Governor.
