What MOS should you go for in the Marines?

When seeking a good MOS in the Marine Corps you should take in several considerations. Are you considering a short or career enlistment? Are you looking for action or a job skill to carry over into the civilian world? Do you want to continue your education while in the Marine Corps?

It depends...If you ask a Marine what a good MOS is, he'll tell you something in the 0300 series, which is Infantry. Even if he's not in the infantry. They raise Marines to believe they're all infantrymen.

Keep in mind that unless you want to be in the Marines until you die you'll need skills which can transition into civilian life after retirement. At eighteen, blowing things up as an Artilleryman may seem the way to go, but your career options will be somewhat limited unless you want to go into law enforcement.

Some to keep in mind, especially if you want to work in the Federal government or as a Defense contractor include 0231 - Intelligence Specialist, 0511 - Marine Air Ground Task Force (MAGTF) Planning Specialist, 0629 - Radio Chief, 0656 - Tactical Network Specialist, 0699 - Communications Chief, 1341 - Engineer Equipment Mechanic, 2841 - Ground Radio Repairman, 4341 - Combat Correspondent, 5711 - Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) Defense Specialist, 5974 - Tactical Data Systems Administrator (TDSA), or possibly something in the 60/61/62 Aircraft Maintenance or 63/64 Avionics school.

A quick comment about artilleryIf you want to go out and blow stuff up in your youth, then get a good job in the civilian sector, artillery's not that bad of a way to go--IF you can get crosstrained as a surveyor. All artillery units have them--it's hard to lay a battery without surveyors.

Anything you would like. From the view of the Marine Corps, all MOS's are good and important. Each MOS is put in place because there is a need for someone to do that particular job.

Take a Marine Corp Network Operator (0651) for example. Their job is it setup data communications so that the front-line and foreward-deployed bases can communicate back to the US as well as with allied forces. Radios only work for short range communication, usually less than 10 miles. The nearest non-hostile location could be hundreds of miles away if not further. When they need to get information either to or from one of these locations, data communications is one of the most accurate, fastest, and securest ways to send the information.

The Marine Corps has MOS's for most jobs you can think of. The Marine Corps has everything from the obvious rifleman (0311) and tank crewman (1833) down to refrigeration mechanic (1161) and Cyber Network Operator [IT] (0651). Every MOS is important in its own way. As far which is better than the others, that's mostly speculation. If you are looking for one that you would like, you would be best to ask yourself, "What would I like to be doing?"

**I ASKED THIS QUESTION** but don't know how to add extra detail. Anyways, I just got processed and made it through MEPS, and I qualified for infantry. I want to fight, but I also want to rank up... Also I would like Crew chief in a helicopter, but I'd rather be on the ground. Any suggestions?
